About Us

Teamwork, playfulness and affection, and a shared interest in spiritual growth define us as a couple. We met in New York City in 1996 when Jendi was practicing corporate law and Adam was a circulation executive at The Atlantic Monthly. He used his marketing talents to craft a personal ad in New York Magazine. Jendi included a pen-and-ink drawing of herself in her response. Adam received about 35 responses in all, but followed up on only one.

On our first date, we laughed to discover that at Harvard we had worked at rival political newspapers, Adam at the liberal monthly and Jendi at its libertarian-conservative competitor. Adam graduated just months before Jendi arrived, so the campus narrowly missed watching the sparks fly. Specific issues aside, we both cared about what was true, and were not afraid to challenge those in authority if we thought they were wrong.

We were each other's first serious relationship. Though we'd dated other people, we'd both been waiting to find the right person for a complete commitment of body and soul. Those values formed an instant bond between us. We married in 1998, two years after we met.

Jendi always dreamed of being a full-time writer, and Adam had an entrepreneurial spirit. We decided to launch our own business in 2001: WinningWriters.com, an online directory of resources for creative writers. We help writers of all experience levels find the best places to publish their work, and we also run two contests for war poetry and humorous verse, which Jendi judges. For the past six years, Writer's Digest has named Winning Writers one of the "101 Best Websites for Writers".

By 2003, we were working exclusively on Winning Writers out of our one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. Our thoughts turned towards finding a larger home where we could raise a family. We considered Brooklyn, but we began to believe that a smaller town would be a better fit. We wanted more human-scale living: more trees, more fresh air, more personal connections, less frenzy, and less cost. We read several books of city profiles.
